Littleton Historic Landmarks and Districts

Downtown Littleton Historic District

Downtown Historic District Logo

On October 26, 2021, City Council approved a historic district for an area inclusive of all properties on Main Street, Alamo Avenue, and the streets in between.

The purpose of designating a historic district in Littleton is to recognize, preserve, and enhance areas that represent distinctive periods of an area’s cultural, social and architectural history and development. A Historic District fosters civic pride, attracts visitors, supports economic vibrancy, and promotes the use of historic properties for education, enjoyment and well-being of property owners and surrounding residents.

Historic districts do not prevent changes from occurring, nor do they prevent new construction. The city’s historic preservation code protects designated properties through demolition, and exterior alteration. The goals of the review process are to retain and enhance historic properties, encourage their adaptation for current use, and ensure that all modifications are compatible with the character of the historic district.

The Downtown Littleton Historic District replaces the Main Street Historic District. The National Register District, approved by the National Parks Service, will remain in place.

Littleton Boulevard: Littleton's Mid Mod Mile

Littleton's Mid Mod Mile logo The Littleton Boulevard corridor experienced substantial growth between 1950 and 1980. Reflective of mid-century architectural styles, the collection of buildings along the corridor are significant to the story of Littleton’s history. The mid-century commercial buildings were collectively named one of Colorado’s most Endangered Places by Colorado Preservation, Inc. in 2014.

City staff hired historic preservation consultants Diane Wray Tomasso and Michael Paglia to prepare the survey. The survey discusses the rise of Modernism in Littleton and provides information on the architectural style and historic significance of the 77 individual buildings within the survey area. The survey is complete and is titled Commercial Modernism In the Greater West Littleton Boulevard Corridor 1950-1980(PDF, 22MB).

A video of the survey project was published and shown on Channel 8 and the city's YouTube channel.

The survey will:

  • Help bring about community awareness on the significance of the buildings
  • Be integral to the task of defining the historic character of the corridor.
  • Provide the basis for making sound judgements in the city’s future land-use planning efforts by helping to define the character, role and desired land uses for Littleton Boulevard.
  • Identify possible landmark structures and districts
