The city is partnering with Mile High Flood District to address erosion problems along Jackass Gulch on the north side of W. Mineral Avenue and west of S. Peninsula Drive, in open space area owned by city and also in private properties. A study of the hydrology and floodplain is nearly complete, and this has informed how to best improve the gulch. One segment was constructed in 2017-2018, and design for upstream segments is nearing completion. Some emergency stabilization (temporary) occurred in Fall 2021 to address immediate safety and water quality problems, but a permanent solution and much larger project is planned. The larger project will first tackle stabilization of the stream and various recreational/trail improvements. A later phase of the larger project will evaluate the best and most efficient way to achieve some reduction in flood intensity through a series of flood detention ponds and/or utilization of the Highline Canal to intercept some of the runoff. This will be evaluated more in coming years. The city hopes to begin construction for the initial stream stabilization and trails phase near the end of 2023. The project will likely take place in phases due to its size and construction cost.
