Project Update

The Broadway at Lee Gulch Culvert Repair and Underpass Project will reach an exciting milestone in summer 2026. In July, Broadway will reopen to its normal two-lane configuration in each direction, marking the completion of the project’s most significant traffic impacts.

Over the past several months, crews have completed the first phase of construction, replacing a critical section of the aging storm sewer 30 feet beneath Broadway while maintaining traffic through the work zone. Reopening all travel lanes improves traffic flow for drivers and represents an important step toward completing this essential infrastructure project.

Construction will continue through late fall 2026, but much of the remaining work will take place away from the roadway as crews complete trail connections, build a 10-foot flood wall, construct multiple retaining walls, install a pedestrian bridge and finish other site improvements. Motorists may still encounter occasional shoulder or lane closures, but the extended traffic shifts that have been in place during the initial phase of construction are ending.

Project Overview

The City of Littleton will replace a deteriorating 66” Corrugated Metal Pipe under Broadway to prevent road failure and flooding concerns. This culvert lies 30 feet below roadway surface and will require full replacement.

In 2024, crews determined an aging metal culvert beneath Broadway just north of Jamison Avenue was deteriorating. While city engineers and specialists with Mile High Flood District were able to temporarily stabilize the culvert, they also confirmed it must be fully replaced to ensure long-term safety and stability.

Replacing the culvert will require digging a 30-foot-deep trench to remove the old, damaged material and replace it with a more durable concrete pipe. This will require reducing traffic to one lane in each direction on Broadway for the duration of the project. While digging into a thoroughfare as heavily traveled as Broadway is rare, it also provides an opportunity to tackle a long-desired project: adding a pedestrian underpass beneath Broadway to connect the east and west sections of the Lee Gulch Trail, offering residents on the east side of Broadway safer access to the High Line Canal Trail on the west side.

Currently, pedestrians and bicyclists traveling along the Lee Gulch Trail must detour 800 feet to cross Broadway at the high-traffic intersection with Jamison Avenue, and cross an access route to AdventHealth Littleton Hospital, risking conflicts with vehicles. A pedestrian underpass at this location has been identified for decades as a goal in numerous local planning efforts, including the public-led Broadway Corridor Study and the Littleton Linkages Trail Study, but was generally considered a longshot due to the challenges of major work beneath Broadway.

The project  includes:

  • Removal of approximately 260 linear feet of 66” corrugated metal pipe (CMP) and replace with 72” reinforced concrete pipe (RCP).
  • Install 10 ft x 12 ft pedestrian underpass under Broadway.
  • Trail improvements along Lee Gulch Trail
