Littleton residents and business owners give high marks to the city's overall quality of life with 95 percent rating it excellent or good, according to the results of the 2016 Resident and Business Surveys. The rating is much higher than the national and Front Range benchmarks. The data and reports were presented to the city council at its June 28 meeting by representatives of the National Research Center (NRC).
Residents feel strongly that the city is a safe community (98%) and has a low crime rate (94%), with trends that have remained consistent since the 2012 and 2014 surveys.
Business owners say the city has the "right amount" of festivals, concerts, bars and taverns, retail shopping opportunities, and public art. Eight out of 10 residents rated travel by light rail and ease of walking in the city as excellent or good but mobility overall is an area of concern for both sets of respondents. Residents believe the most pressing issues facing Littleton in the next two years are traffic (44%) and street maintenance (37%). Evaluations of street maintenance and traffic congestion have been declining since 2012 with a significant decrease in ratings of street maintenance observed between 2014 and 2016 (from 56% excellent or good in 2014 to 44% in 2016).
Areas deemed of higher importance and lower quality include: city management, traffic flow, snow plowing, public transit services, open space areas, environmental sustainability, and economic development.
With an interest in gauging citizen willingness to support a $0.75 cent sales and use tax increase that would generate approximately $7.7 million annually to fund infrastructure improvements, 77 percent of residents and 71 percent of businesses indicated they strongly or somewhat support the idea.
On July 12, staff and council will conduct a study session to consider a process to address future capital needs and financing options.
The NRC has conducted over 1,000 surveys for local governments. This data is useful for performance measurement, council goal setting, and strategic planning.
