Sanitary sewer and wastewater - what is it?

• The sanitary sewer system is a collection of underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home or business to the wastewater treatment plant.
• Wastewater includes all water that goes down the drains in your house, or when you flush the toilet.
• All of Littleton's wastewater goes to the wastewater treatment plant in Englewood, called South Platte Water Renewal Partners.
• Littleton jointly owns this wastewater treatment plant with the City of Englewood.
• In addition to cities of Littleton and Englewood, the treatment plant services a larger area of approximately 100 square miles, including much of unincorporated Littleton addresses.
• There are a number of Water and Sanitation Districts within Littleton (both within incorporated and unincorporated city limits) that manage the sanitary sewer system. Find district on the Sewer, Water, and Storm District Map or on the Sanitation District list.
• Water is treated at the plant to a quality that is suitable for discharge back into the South Platte River. For more information on the treatment process, visit the South Platte Water Renewal Partners.

Unlike wastewater that goes to the treatment plant, storm water is not treated. Storm water is the system of inlets and pipes that collect runoff during a rainstorm and convey it to the creeks.
