“I teach at Arapahoe Community College, and I’m raising my kids near Little Raven Elementary.
I commute by bike most of the year. I love it – I notice more. I notice interesting houses, where construction is, or all the beautiful flowering trees in the spring. Recently, I bumped into a coworker on my ride, and we stopped and chatted. When I don’t bike, I walk to work, like I did today.
To me, biking means exercise. When you have kids, you don’t always have time to work out, but at least commuting by bike I get 20 minutes of exercise a day.
Also, I teach environmental ethics. I want to show students you can do small things to help. You’ve got to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
My kids are 7 and 5. When I was a kid, my bike meant freedom. I hope that’s what biking brings to their lives too. We love riding together to Lost Coffee or downtown Littleton.
I recognize biking to work is a luxury and a privilege because I can afford a house in a neighborhood where it’s easier. If you live in the exurbs, there’s not much public transit or good biking opportunities. Our society isn’t always set up for people to take advantage of biking. I support any effort to make it safer and easier. Give it a chance – if it saves lives, it’s worth it.”
