About the Study

Broadway between I-25 and Highlands Ranch Parkway is a vibrant corridor where people live, work, eat, and shop. This 11-mile stretch of Broadway provides local and regional connections through the City and County of Denver, Arapahoe County, cities of Englewood, Littleton, and Centennial, and Douglas County. The City of Littleton is partnering with these agencies to study the transportation and land use conditions along this section of Broadway. This study is separate from and will be coordinated with Denver’s South Broadway & I-25 Improvement Project.

Vision

Broadway will celebrate and connect the unique identities of our communities, foster economic vibrancy, provide safe and comfortable spaces, and support regional mobility options for all.

Process

The study examined existing conditions and future conditions for the different character areas along the corridor. Key considerations included transportation, land use, and economics. Each of these factors was considered at each stage of the plan process, and the coordination between them important for the success of this study and the future of the Broadway corridor.

The study included development and evaluation of alternatives based on a consideration of existing and future conditions, roadway geometry, residential and business access, traffic flow, environmental factors, the location of communities and other developed areas, and community and agency plans and input.

The study consisted of four phases:

  1. Corridor Conditions Assessment: The study team collected data and study corridor conditions, especially for people living and working along the corridor.
  2. Corridor Visioning: The study team generated a cohesive vision for the corridor and established goals and objectives for changes along it.
  3. Improvement Plan: The study team generated ideas to achieve the vision and goals for the corridor through physical infrastructure enhancements, policy changes, or other strategies to catalyze improvements.
  4. Conceptual Design and/or Early Actions: The study team further developed the best ideas and created conceptual designs.

Study Goals

The following goals represent the desired outcomes for the proposed improvements to the corridor.

Broadway Corridor Study Recommendations

The recommendations from the Broadway Corridor Study include various multimodal facilities that will create a strong sense of place and encourage healthy development in Littleton. For the Littleton portion of Broadway, the recommendations include:

  • Maintaining two travel lanes in each direction, but make them narrower than the existing lanes to calm traffic and provide more space for walking, biking, and socializing.
  • Implementing protected intersections for cyclists.
  • Constructing 9-foot sidewalks on both sides of Broadway.
  • Installing 7-foot cycle tracks on both sides of Broadway.
  • Creating 4- to 6-foot buffer zones to separate traffic from pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Introducing intersection transit upgrades to reduce bus delays and lay the groundwork for future bus rapid transit.

A detailed summary of the study is presented in the project video below. A full list of recommendations and visualizations from the study can be viewed in the linked PDF documents in the Related Information section at the bottom of this page.
