The city attorney is appointed by the city council. The city attorney is the legal advisor to the city council and city manager. He is also responsible for providing legal direction and support to all city departments and serving as legal consultant to the city’s authorities, boards and commissions.

The city attorney institutes and defends legal actions on behalf of the city. Other duties of the city attorney include drafting and reviewing agreements, leases, ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents.

The city attorney's office prosecutes all municipal cases on behalf of the city. These include traffic offenses, criminal offenses, assaults, thefts, zoning and other city code violations.
